Let’s Get to Know Each Other!
About the Artist
My name is Jess Riera. I am originally from California but reside in Portland, Oregon.
I started drawing as early as I can remember. I was always taking drawing classes throughout grade school and high school, and doodling in a sketchbook. Upon entering college, the only thing that held my full attention was art class.
So I went to Art School at the Academy of Art University! I received a Bachelor’s Degree in Illustration, and I loved it, but it didn’t prepare me for a career. After graduating, I went back to bartending, and also started working at a winery in Sonoma County, California. This is where I started to find my calling. I began hand-lettering the special boards in the tasting room, and I was asked to join the marketing team for the winery! I always had a knack for graphic design, and I loved the combination of graphics and illustration.
With my customer service background, love for graphic design, and solid drawing skills, I started my career as a Graphic Designer and Illustrator. Around this time, I started playing competitive Roller Derby! I was able to join the marketing committee and started designing flyers and drawing illustrations of skaters. From there my career blossomed into print and production design, branding, and presentation design at Stanford University.
After my time at Stanford, I freelanced for about 2 years. Currently, the impact of Generative AI is impacting all areas of design. So I have shifted to taking Illustration and fine-art-based clients. I am interested in editorial design.
In 2023, I started an embroidery business - Horror Pop Designs.
I hand embroider fine art, as well as create hand-drawn patterns. I travel to different markets around the PNW selling my work at local maker markets! Please view my Instagram page for more information and where you can see me in person!
Thank you!
